Blue Wing Olive

The Blue-winged Olive (BWO) is a small, delicate mayfly that drives fall and spring trout feeding frenzies across rivers and streams, recognized for its olive-green thorax and subtle bluish wings; anglers target BWOs with precise, understated dry flies, emergers, and nymph patterns in sizes 12–22 to match their diminutive profile. Timing and presentation are critical—trout often key on the slender, slow-drifting naturals during low-light periods or overcast days—so using light tippet, soft casts, and properly weighted nymphs or emergers can dramatically increase hookups. Because BWOs hatch prolifically in many cold-water fisheries, having a selection of variations in color (olive, dun, olive-brown), body material (antron, CDC, dubbing), and wing types lets anglers imitate spinners, emergers, and dun stages throughout the hatch. Mastery of the BWO hatch pays dividends: accurately matching size and posture and reading where fish take in the column turns short, patient sessions into consistent action.
