The cripple drake is a classic trout fly that imitates an injured or struggling mayfly emerger, making it an irresistible target for wary fish. Tied with a sparsely dubbed body, soft hackle and slightly splayed wings, the pattern rides low and disjointed in the film, suggesting a vulnerable insect about to hatch or just fallen back to the water. Anglers favor the cripple drake during late spring and summer mayfly hatches when trout key on weakened insects near the surface; its subtle profile and lifelike movement often provoke follows and aggressive takes when more perfect imitations are ignored.
