The Quill soft hackle is a classic wet fly designed to imitate a range of emerging and drowned insects, notable for its slender, quill-bodied profile and mobile, soft-hackle collar that pulses underwater to suggest legs or gills. Typically tied with a tapered abdomen of stripped feather quill or floss and a sparse, flowing hackle wound one or two turns near the head, the pattern fishes well in sizes from tiny to moderate and excels when swung or allowed to sink and be regained with the current. Its simple silhouette and lifelike movement make the Quill soft hackle highly effective in both trout rivers and stillwater edges, especially during caddis and mayfly hatches or when fish are feeding on subsurface insects. Durable, easy to cast, and adaptable in color and size, the Quill remains a staple in any angler’s fly box for enticing wary fish with subtle, natural presentation.
