The Blue Wing Olive (BWO) is a small, olive-bodied mayfly and a cornerstone dry-fly pattern for trout fishing. Noted for its subtle profile and delicate rise, the BWO hatch triggers selective feeding—making accurate presentation and light tippet essential. Anglers match size and shade with slender, low-floating dry flies or emergers to imitate naturals during cool-season hatches, high-elevation spring waters, and overcast days. Mastering the BWO hatch delivers consistent takes from picky trout in streams, tailwaters, and freestone rivers.
